Custom Research Diets
|
PMI's TestDiet® division formulates and produces custom grain-based and purified diets for academic, government and pharmaceutical laboratories around the world when nutritional or physical requirements cannot be met using standard diets. TestDiet® offers over 100 years of experience, a comprehensive team of animal nutrition experts, and a state-of-the-art ISO 9002 production facility. No matter what the species, TestDiet® can produce exactly what you require to obtain research data you can trust. Custom diets are available as compacted pellets, in meal form, in precision pellets, or as a liquid. Color coding of pellets is also available. Although most custom diets cannot be autoclaved without damaging the diet, all custom diets can be gamma-irradiation sterilized at a nominal additional cost. |

Modified LabDiets
TestDiet® can add nutritional components to standard grain-based diets. This process is often used for adding fats, oils, cholesterol or other ingredients and can also be used to add nutrients such as protein, minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates and fiber. The advantage of using grain-based diets is greater palatability and acceptance by research animals.
Custom Grain-based Diets
When a modified grain-based diet cannot achieve the results you want, or if adding a disproportionate amount of an ingredient would render a diet nutritionally unsound, TestDiet® can formulate and produce custom grain-based diets "from scratch." This is achieved using standard multi-nutrient ingredients normally used in such products or by substituting nutrient-specific ingredients (such as milk casein as a protein source). This is particularly useful when you need a diet comparable to one of the standard LabDiet products but with certain components deleted (e.g. a diet with no added Vitamin A or no soy protein).
Purified Diets
When your research requires a precise, repeatable,
identifiable background diet, purified ingredient
diets are the perfect solution. Each nutrient
in a purified diet is derived from a distinct
refined, human-grade ingredient so that you always
know the exact nutritional content and energy
level of that ingredient. Basal Diet 5755, a casein-dextrin-sucrose
purified diet is used as the starting point for
many modifications. TestDiet® uses only vitamin-free
milk casein and purified diets are free of phytoestrogens
and bacterial contamination. Purified diets offer
full knowledge of all ingredients, complete open
formulas, repeatable consistency and easy modification.
Some examples of purified diets are DIO (Diet
Induced Obesity) Diets, Low Sodium Diet, Protein
Free Diet, Cholesterol Free Diet, Folic Acid Deficient
Diet, and High Carbohydrate Diet. Please note
purified diets must be stored in a cool, dry location
due to the absence of antioxidants or preservatives.
Medicated and Test Compound Diets
When required by your research, medications and
test compounds can also be added to any diet,
including standard grain-based diets, custom grain-based
diets, and purified diets. This provides an effective,
accurate and convenient means of dosing your animals
for research purposes. With precision and consistency,
TestDiet® can homogenously blend in virtually any
compound, chemical, medication or nutrient. Examples
of some readily available medicated diets are
Fenbendazole Diets, Sulfa Trim Diets (sulfamethoxazole
and trimethoprim), and Doxycycline Diets. Some
test compounds are available through Purina and some customers supply their own test compound
for incorporation into a diet. Proper documentation
of all test compounds is required. Please note
that in order to protect the safety of your animals
and staff, and to ensure the integrity of the
facility and its products, Purina TestDiet® will not handle any toxins, carcinogens, mutagens,
radioactive substances, controlled dangerous substances
(CDS) or live organisms.
Liquid Diets
Suspendable liquid diets are used in many types of research, the most well-known being alcohol studies in rodents and rabbits. They are manufactured in a dry powder form which simplifies shipping and storage. Liquid diets are nutritionally balanced and are stabilized against microbial growth. They mix easily, are fully suspended with minimal foaming, and, once mixed with water or ethanol, can be stored under refrigeration for many days.
